Insomnia & Sleep Disorders
Sleep problems we treat
Sleep problems can develop and persist for a range of reasons. They are sometimes associated with lifestyle factors and other health conditions. A sleep psychologist can help you improve your sleep and general wellbeing if you experience any of the following difficulties:
Insomnia
Insomnia includes difficulty falling asleep, frequent or prolonged awakenings during the night and early-morning awakenings. People with insomnia experience unrefreshing sleep and distress associated with impaired daytime functioning. Over time, the concept of bedtime and sleeping can become strongly associated with feelings of anxiety.
Daytime Sleepiness
Daytime sleepiness is a common symptom of sleep disorders that is typically caused by sleep deprivation. However, sleepiness is sometimes confused with fatigue which may result from other serious medical conditions such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Therefore, it is important that you consult your doctor before seeking therapy for daytime sleepiness.
Shift Work
Adjusting to a work schedule can cause sleep problems when there is a conflict between your body clock and your work schedule. Shift workers may sleep up to 4 hours less than the average worker and have trouble sleeping or be severely tired. They may experience poor quality, unrefreshing sleep, feel constantly fatigued or exhausted and suffer serious health consequences.
Nightmares
Dreaming and the occasional unpleasant dream are a part of normal sleep. However distressing nightmares that cause you to awaken and fear returning to sleep can be difficult. If you experience frequent nightmares that regularly disrupt your sleep and cause anxiety and problems with your functioning during the day, then psychological therapy can help.
Coping with CPAP
CPAP therapy is the most effective and common treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Some people find it difficult to cope with CPAP therapy. However, failure to use CPAP can result in serious ongoing risks to your physical and psychological health. Motivational and cognitive-behavioural therapies can enhance adjustment and commitment to regular CPAP therapy.
Body Clock Alignment
Misalignment between the your internal body clock (sleep-wake cycle) and the light-darkness cycle can result in insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, problems thinking clearly and doing your usual activities. Bright-light therapy re-synchronises your body clock with your daytime schedule and can help resolve this problem.
